The Milestone 2013

Objective: February 2013 an alumni call was announced to design a new feature for the courtyard to the Howard University School of Architecture Building. In Memorium of Barbara G Laurie, Professor, former AIA President, Mentor.

Concept: A demure and contemplative gesture that would serve as a generational reminder of fragility and continuity. This was an opprtunity to explore concepts derived from Architecture''s archaic ideal...To commemorate.

The Design was confined to the existing courtyard which holds a prominent entry location on the corner of The University's Main Drive.  I chose to develop a low profiled solution, as to design something vertical might garner oppostion to the historic preservation ideals of historic campuses, which in turn could be limiting to the materials and technologies that I wanted to integrate.

The result is a visual presence from the campus corner that is gravitationally alluring.

*Professor Laurie was my Professor for Studios III & IV, Mentor and Thesis Juror. As a felow Alumnus and Architect I was more than happy to honor her memory in the best way a Designer knows how.
